What is the working title of your next book? Hungry Ghost is book #2 of the Tales of the Pack series.
Where did the idea come from for the book? The first book in Tales of the Pack, Lunatic Fringe, came about from a conversation I had with my partner where I insisted that the lack of female werewolves in pop culture was a travesty. In my imagination, women have much in common with werewolves. I mean, who else changes moods with the moon? As I followed that thread, I realized that werewolves also have a lot in common with queer women’s spaces: we tend to run in tight, incestuous packs, we buck traditional gender roles around beauty standards and “appropriate” behavior, and we fight back against the hegemony (otherwise known as the patriarchy in this case). Thus, Tales of the Pack was born.
What genre does your book fall under? Hungry Ghost is an urban fantasy, coming of age, queer novel.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? I’ve yet to see an actress who I’d like to take on Lexie. Kate Mara is closest to type, but closer to my age than to Lexie’s. I wrote Archer with Chan Marshall in mind, though I think Olivia Wilde would be a stunning Archer. I think Renee would be the hardest to cast, simply because she’s such a striking and unique beauty. But trust me, I’d love to sit in on those auditions.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Your favorite pack of lesbian werewolves is back to defend their town against a new foe.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? As with Lunatic Fringe, I’m self-publishing Hungry Ghost. It was such a rewarding and creative endeavor the first time, I’m excited to do it again.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? Eight months, from February to October.
What other books would you compare this to within your genre? The one word I’ve heard used more than any for my first book was “unique”. I think it’s a mark of self-publishing that my books are difficult to categorize. Because I’m self-publishing I don’t have to fight with an editorial board and publicist to make it look and read like other books on the market; I can be authentic to my own writing style and expression.
When will your book be out? Hungry Ghost will release in March of 2013.
